Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster DVD

Price: 19.95 MSRP; although I got it for 13.99!

Year: 2007

Video Quality

Japanese Version: ****/*****

American Version: ***/*****

I want to make it clear that the lighting in both versions has been increased, revealing things such as strings. This was slightly embarrassing for me. The Japanese version has a bit of artifacting damage apparent. Ghosting and transparency occur throughout. There is a teeny bit of print damage throughout. The American version, on the other hand, is horrible. Speckles, hairs, scratches, and fades are clear throughout.

Audio:

****/*****

The Japanese track is pronouncedly loud. It is without audio levels being played down. However, the American version is less fortunate, the audio often being oddly warped by tampering with the audio levels. However, the bass on the musical score, particularly Ghidorah’s theme, is raised significantly.

Extra Features:

****/*****

The most prominent feature is the audio commentary by David Kalat. Unfortunately, the audio commentary itself may come off as annoying to some viewers; Kalat’s fanboyish musings about dubbing are a tad overplayed. His exaggerated vocal expressions often are odd and out of place. Sometimes, while speaking about the film, he will suddenly switch gears and talk about another subject. For example quote, “I will now talk about the high points of King Kong vs. Godzilla just because I feel like it.”  However, it is still informative, and goes into detail about Shinichi Sekizawa’s career and involvement in Ghidorah. He also debunks rumors about Sekizawa; For example, he burns away rumors among the fan community that Sekizawa ruined the Godzilla series.

The second feature is a biography of The Old Man; Eiji Tsuburaya. Godzizewski’s biographical details are very informative.

There is an image gallery; it’s not too special. The original Japanese trailer is present, however unsubtitled.

Overall:  ****/*****

I’d recommend this!
