Gojira (Disc 1 – Gojira)

Region: 1

Studio: Classic Media (Producer: Sony)

Country: US

Format: NTSC

Year: 2006

No. Of Chapter Stops: 24

Time: 96 Minutes

Video Quality: **** ½ / *****

I give it a 4 ½ due to the fact we’re dealing with something that is over 50 years old. Since it is that old, the source is very nice. There is grain and specks on the picture. The subtitles are removable from the video which is a plus for people who know Japanese. The video is presented in it’s original 1.33:1 format.

Audio Quality: ****/*****

We have two 2-Ch audio tracks, Japanese and English Commentary. The Japanese audio is actually really good considering the age; I really couldn’t find any problems with it. The commentary is mildly entertaining.

Overall: ****/*****

This is probably the best release of Gojira (or Godzilla: King of the Monsters as all the other DVD titles are called). I recommend that you avoid all others and go for this one. Also, I got this one for the good price of $16 at Wal-Mart. I hope all the future Classic Media Releases are as good as this one.

Special Features: *** ½ /*****

Since this is produced by Sony Pictures, but they don’t own this though, Classic Media does. The bonus features are entertaining but there’s not much there. The original Japanese Trailer is all right. Now, there’s two little featurette’s, “Godzilla: Story Development” and “Making of the Godzilla Suit”. Both are narrated by Ed Godziszewski. It’s nice to see the photographic process about how the original G’ was made.
