Mothra Vs. Godzilla
Region 1
Studio: Classic Media
Country: US
Format: NTSC
Year: 2007
Chapters: 11
Time: 87 Minutes (Time for
both versions)
Video: ** 1/2 / *****
The Japanese print of the film gets a 4,
barely, there's some problems I have with both versions personally with the print. There's some contrast problems
when you see dark images, but that's it. The Japanese film is presented in Anamorphic 2.35:1 and has switchable English subs
which are better than the other sub prints used on the other Classic Media, maybe because this was filmed in Widescreen. The
English print of the film is terrible; it is the widescreen version of 2.35:1 cropped to 1.85:1 and you wouldn't think much
of the action would be lost, but you'd be surprised. The scene where it's Godzilla destroying the castle, you don't see him
in the shot until it cuts back and he's there. When the professor is asked a question about if Mothra would arrive, he's not
in the shot at all, as in the 2.35:1 version the professor is on the far left and you see him perfectly. The print that used
is possibly the worst print I've seen that's not artificially damaged like the film Grindhouse. There is severe color
saturation problems throughout the whole film, grain and hairs/lines throughout as well which is pretty bad. The whole thing
on cropping the film is just a major dissapointment.
Audio: *** 1/2 / *****
The audio is 2-Ch on both of the versions.
The Japanese audio sounds quite well and the English is, well, bad. The audio sound kind of muffled in some places.

Bonus Material: *** / *****
We have a nice non-anamorphic, widescreen, Japanese trailer. There's audio commentary on the English Version that is
nicely done, Ed and Steve aren't ripping the film a new asshole like on Godzilla Raids Again. The one thing I was looking
forward to was the Akira Ifukube Dedication with Tribute by Shogo Tomiyama, which like the Suit Acting featurette, let me
down. The tribute by Tomiyama is just text on the screen, while I was expecting a video of him talking about his friend. Then
finally a gallery of Posters and Lobby Cards.
Overall: ***1/2 / *****
Classic Media let me down again on this one, on the English print. It was the print we all grew up with and how do we
get it? Destroyed. I doubt Classic Media is actually restoring the films like it is claimed. I just hope Ghidorah, The
Three Headed Monster & Invasion of the Astro Monster is better quality.
